Only 36 days are left to start great sports festival Summer Olympics 2016 in Makka of football, Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro. Every Olympic lover must know 16 facts about this greatest sports festival.
1. First time in Olympic history any South American Country – Rio de Janeiro going to host Olympic Games. Rio won the bid in 2009 after beating out Madrid, Tokyo, and Chicago.
2. The torch relay was started on April 21 in the Birthplace of Olympics that is Olympia in Greece, before traveling across the Brazil for more than 90 days and finally finishing in Rio on August 5.
3. Opening and Closing ceremony will be held in Rio’s Maracana Stadium, a football stadium. The capacity of the ground is around 78,000.
4 – As predicted, 10,500 athletes from 206 countries are expected to take part in Rio summer Olympiad 2016, competing across 306 events.
5 – The competition will take place in four different areas: Copacabana, Barra, Deodoro, and Maracanã.
6 – Rugby Sevens will be played at the Rio Games, with both the U.S. women’s and men’s teams. The seven-a-side variant of rugby lasts only 15 minutes per game.
7 – After 112 years Golf will return to the Olympics. Earlier in the 1900 and 1904 Games Golf was last played. American golf-course architect Gil Hanse designed 18 holes in Rio.
8- First time the feature Olympians born in year 2000 will play in Rio games. As per rules all competitors must have been born before Jan. 1, 2003, but many sports have other age requirements for health and safety reasons.
9 – A team of athletes who have been forced to flee their countries will be allowed to compete for the first time.
10 – The mascot for 2016 is “Vinicius,” a yellow and blue creature representing Brazilian wildlife. It resembles a cat or monkey that can fly and has the power to stretch its limbs and body.
11 – Total 7.5 million tickets are available for sale. The Price of tickets is from $40 to almost $3,000 for the best seats at the opening ceremony.
12 – 306 events in 28 sports categories will be played.
13 – The total costs of the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro will mount up to 37.6 billion Brazilian Real: 24.1 billion Real for the infrastructure of the city, 6.5 billion Real for sports facilities and 7 billion Real for the operation and organization of the event
14- Per day 60,000 meals will be prepared for athletes. Rice and black beans and barbecued meat will be given by other local offerings, such as tapioca, pao de queijo (cheese bread) and acai (an Amazonian fruit).
15- For Rio 2016 games around 70,000 volunteers are needed, 50,000 already selected which are mostly from Brazil. In rest 20,000, mostly volunteers will be chosen from U.S, U.K, Russia, and China.
16 – Around 85,000 soldiers and policemen the largest security force assembled at any event in Brazil’s history.
